What Is Root Canal Retreatment?
There are many factors that may lead to additional problems after a root canal therapy. In some cases, the problem was not eliminated during the initial therapy and in different cases, a fresh infection might have formed in the tooth, commonly related to defective restorations. After the tooth reveals signs of a disease for the second time, our dental team will generally recommend an endodontic retreatment. Similar to the original root canal treatment, root canal retreatment is performed to clean the canals of the tooth and eliminate infection. We may suggest the GentleWave® system or other cutting-edge disinfection technologies to deliver fluids effectively throughout the root canal system, removing infection and preserving essential tooth tissue. If you still have pain or signs of an infection after a root canal, schedule an exam at Prime Endodontics in Kirkland, WA to determine if you will need a root canal retreatment or another procedure.
How Does Root Canal Retreatment Work?
Your endodontic retreatment will be performed in our office using anesthesia to numb the needed area. If the procedure is extensive or if you have dental fears, stronger sedation options could be used. Once you are prepped, a team member will reopen the tooth and take out the filling material placed during the previous root canal. The inside of the tooth, including each of the root tips, will then be completely disinfected. After the tooth is cleaned and analyzed, it will be strengthened with a new filling material and then sealed. A dental restoration (crown or bridge) is generally placed over the tooth for protection and strength.
Our team may employ GentleWave technology, a sophisticated tool that enhances the potential for preserving natural teeth, even after a previous root canal has failed. The GentleWave procedure delivers sound waves and fluids to penetrate deeply into a tooth's canals. This system excels at removing bacteria, diseased debris, and inflamed pulp by accessing the tiniest crevices of the tooth, areas that other techniques often miss.
What Are the Benefits of Root Canal Retreatment?
Root canal retreatment is typically considered when a tooth that has previously undergone root canal therapy fails to heal properly or develops new problems. A consultation with our endodontic team at Prime Endodontics in Kirkland, WA can provide specific insights tailored to your specific case. Benefits of opting for root canal retreatment include:
- Preservation of natural tooth
- Avoidance of extractions and implants
- Resolution of infection
- Long-term oral health benefits

Root Canal Retreatment Reviews
I had to quickly find a doctor for my root canal retreatment and doctor coheneca and his staff Karen and coworker, and assistant Beth were very kind, and professional, courteous and passionate on what they were doing to make me feel very comfortable not stressed and no pain in my treatment as I was promised. I am really happy I found a right spot for my needs! Thanks to the entire team on your great service
I was referred to Prime Endodontics and Doctor Cohenca due to pain after a crown prep procedure. I called on Friday and was able to get a same day appointment. Everyone was extremely welcoming and made for a very relaxing experience. Dr Cohenca did a thorough exam, and then confirmed I needed a root canal. The procedure was done the same day, in less than 2h. Dr Cohenca and all the staff went above and beyond to ensure I was comfortable, and explained everything in detail. For a procedure that gets such a bad reputation, I have to say it was one of the easiest and most comfortable dental appointments I ever had. Will definitely be using them in the future if another issue with pain occurs.
In the last two years, I needed two root canals. Both times, Dr. Cohenca performed exceptional service. As a nurse myself, I value his expertise, detailed explanation of procedure and his great 'bed-side' manner. His assistant was just as professional and welcoming, eager to make me as comfortable as possible. Thank you Dr. Cohenca and the whole team.

He took the time to thoroughly explain my diagnosis and treatment plan, answering all of my questions and addressing any concerns I had. I felt confident in his abilities and knew I was in good hands. The procedure itself was virtually painless, thanks to Dr. Cohenca's gentle and precise approach. He used the latest technology and techniques to ensure the best possible outcome. Throughout the process, he constantly checked in to make sure I was comfortable and informed about what was happening. Not only is Dr. Cohenca highly skilled, but he also has a genuine and caring demeanor. He truly cares about his patients and their well-being. He went above and beyond to ensure my comfort and satisfaction throughout the entire process. I can't thank Dr. Nestor Cohenca enough for his exceptional care and expertise in endodontics. Thanks to him, I now have a healthy and pain-free smile. I highly recommend him to anyone in need of endodontic treatment.
I had a great experience during my root canal retreatment. Dr. Cohenca was very thorough in his explanations and gentle in his work. I was offered a warm blanket and headphones to block out scary noises. I was made very comfortable and there was even a phone call follow-up to make sure I was doing okay. It’s the little things that matter! Highly highly recommend!
